Project Introduction

As an extension of the "Telephone Booth Reconstruction Plan" on campus, "Echoes" marks not only the first attempt by the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (UABB) to enter a university environment but also a profound dialogue on memory, connection, and co-creation. We have invited 11 artists, each with their own unique ties to the university, to return to campus. Taking their individual creative journeys as trigger points, they reunite here and now—as if posing a question to the past and offering a lingering response to time itself.

"Echoes" refers both to the reverberation of sound and to the re-development of memories across time. The vintage telephone booth serves as a symbolic medium, linking conversations between the past, present, and future. It acts as a container for personal memories and a channel for public dialogue. In this project, each artist collaborates with students from non-art disciplines—a setup that in itself embodies an "echo": the artists' early experiences intersect with the students' contemporary perspectives, blurring and reshaping the boundaries between professional and amateur. Private expression intertwines with external intervention, ultimately crystallizing into works that either extend original intentions or emerge entirely anew.

The 11 telephone booths will be placed in public spaces across campus, becoming heterogeneous nodes in the everyday landscape and triggers for contemplation. They are not merely venues for displaying artworks but open arenas for interaction and potential sites for teaching and learning. Throughout the exhibition, we will continue the university's ongoing discussion—initiated during The 2nd Culture & Arts Festival in 2020—on "public art and the right to aesthetics", seeking to spark new social perceptions and intellectual resonances through dialogue and encounter as art enters non-traditional spaces.

All of this is not just about how art is seen, but also about how voices are heard, how memories are sustained, and how the future is gradually formed in the common narrative.

?Artist HU Liying's Team

HU Liying

HU Liying is an installation artist whose practice is deeply rooted in theoretical construction. An MA graduate of Central Saint Martins, she is known for her rigorous formalism and conceptual precision, navigating the convergence of material, structure, and philosophy. She conceptualizes space as a narrative medium, articulating a theoretical system she terms "TOPOLEXIA". By constructing specific "fields", she examines the dynamic tensions between the tangible and the intangible, and between rational structure and emotional narrative. Her work—spanning sculpture, installation, and cross-media experiments—exposes the transformative nature of opposing elements to unveil the inherent paradoxes of daily existence.
